給兒子十七歲生日的一封信

09/11/2009

Dear Chris,
Today you turn 17.  My little baby boy has grown so fast!!  I still remember the day you were born, when doctor put you in my arms, I cried like a baby with joy.  You are truly a Godsend. You have been the light of our life, just like the meaning of your name “the one who brings light.”  We’re grateful each day to have a son like you.
I got emotional this morning thinking that at this time next year, you will be in college, probably thousands of miles away from home.  It feels like just yesterday when I hold your hand on the first day of school to take you to your classroom.  We’ve watched you grew, learned, made friends, formed your own opinions, and shaped your characters...to become the fine young man you are today.  As you said in your college application essay “Character is higher than intellect,” your integrity shows time after time that you always want to do the right things.  It’s not an easy task facing all different kinds of temptations while growing up, but you always strive to be the best of you.  I admire you for that.
College will be one of the major milestones in your life.  You’ll face the world all by yourself.  I do hope that all the values we’ve taught you engrave in your heart, and you’ll make wise decisions in your daily life.  Your will encounter hardships and failures in your life journey, but don’t forget that we’re here to support you, comfort you, cheer for you, and most of all, love you.
God has given you so many talents and blessings, He has great plan for you.  As your mother, I hope that I’ve done my best to bring out your potential to help you fulfill your destiny.  Go, spread your wings, and conquer the world.  Remember, our Mighty God is on your side.

With love,
Mom
